NHMMI Launches A Comprehensive Heart Failure Clinic
Difference between Heart Failure and Heart Attack
Dr.Sumanta Shekhar Padhi told media persons that Heart failure, in simple terms, can be defined as weakening of the heart. It is commonly confused with heart attack, but they differ in the sense that in case of heart failure the heart is not able to pump blood as well as it should to meet the demand of other body parts. Whereas, in heart attack the muscles of the heart itself get damaged due to lack of oxygen. Heart failure is usually a complication of some other heart disease like coronary artery blockage, previous heart attack or problem with electrical conduction system of the heart. It is a serious chronic condition which takes few years to develop but sometimes can also start suddenly if the heart suffers a trauma.
Some of the common symptoms of heart failure are- shortness of breath, persistent tiredness, swelling in lower parts of body, cough, frequent need to urinate at night and loss of appetite. Some of these symptoms are similar to the symptoms of other common diseases. Also, the heart and the body try to compensate for the reduced supply of blood to a certain extent. Due to this compensation mechanism and lack of awareness of the patient, heart failure often goes unnoticed for a long time before it becomes severe and everyday activities become very difficult for the patient. That’s why it is important to get a regular cardiac check-up specially if someone belong to the high-risk group for heart failure.
“Management of heart failure requires state-of-the-art infrastructure like dedicated cardiac ICU, advance cath lab, modular operation theatres and a prompt emergency department with advance cardiac life support ambulances.” told Dr Alok Kumar Swain, Senior Medical Officer, NHMMI Narayana Multispeciality Hospital, “Latest diagnostic tools like MRI, CT Scan, Electrophysiology study, Stress Test, 3D Echo provide accurate and early diagnosis of heart failure. Also, a rehabilitation program is essential to ease the patient’s transition to normal life after the treatment.” he added.
