NHMMI Doctors Remove 10 Kg Tumour Successfully

Tumour weighing 10 kg removed from abdomen of female in complex surgery. A female from Jharkhand got a new lease of life after undergoing an over 4-hour-long complex surgery at a hospital here for removing a huge tumour that occupied “80 per cent space” in her abdomen
Dr Mou Roy said the tumour, weighing 10 kg and 30*30 cm in length, was compressing on all structures of her abdomen, including both kidneys, stomach, spleen and pancreas.
Dr Mou Roy senior Consultant in the Department of Surgical Oncology at the NHMMI Narayana Hospital said a “ multidisciplinary team comprising to Cardiac surgeon, Dr. P Harikumar, and Anaesthetists Dr. Alok Swain and Dr. Sneha was formed to carry out this complicated Surgery”
The Lady resident of Jharkhand, was suffering from discomfort in her stomach for the last six months. she was evaluated and the scan revealed a large tumor in her body occupying more than 80 per cent space in the abdomen. It’s called retroperitoneal Liposarcoma, which can only be treated with surgery.
The surgery done recently, would also help in proper flow of blood, to her Kidney, Dr Mou Roy said, performing anaesthesia on this patient was complicated because this huge tumour had compromised blood return to the heart.
According to Dr Mou Roy “The most complex part of the surgery was separating the tumour from renal veins, aorta and vena cava without loosing blood or damaging these structures, and to achieve it the team had to conduct this surgery with absolute perfection”
“It took over 4 hours for the team to successfully remove the tumour”
Dr Mou, Senior Cancer surgeon for the case, said, “This tumour was a well-differentiated liposarcoma (kind of cancer) and to our knowledge this is the largest liposarcoma removed in our place till date.
